SCIENCE & EVIDENCE

The ocean
in numbers.

Understanding the ocean begins with evidence. Explore some of the numbers that reveal how deeply our ocean is connected to Earth's climate, atmosphere and living systems.

~50%
Oxygen production
Around half of Earth's oxygen production is associated with photosynthetic organisms in the ocean, including microscopic phytoplankton.
01
>90%
Excess heat absorbed
The ocean has absorbed the vast majority of the excess heat accumulating in Earth's climate system.
02
~30%
Human CO₂ emissions
The ocean absorbs a significant share of human-generated carbon dioxide, influencing both climate and ocean chemistry.
03
>80%
A world still unexplored
Most of the ocean remains unmapped, unobserved or unexplored, leaving vast ecosystems and processes still to be understood.
04
EVIDENCE MATTERS

Built around science, not headlines.

Ocean Breathing aims to translate complex ocean science into clear, accessible stories without losing the evidence behind them. Each ocean topic can connect visitors directly to scientific research, datasets and trusted institutions.

SOLUTIONS & RESTORATION

A different ocean
future is possible.

The challenges facing our ocean are enormous, but they are not irreversible. Around the world, science, communities and new ideas are already showing us what recovery can look like.

FROM UNDERSTANDING TO ACTION

Protect what remains. Restore what has been damaged. Transform the systems driving ocean decline.

01 / PROTECT

Protect

Safeguard critical marine habitats, biodiversity and vulnerable ecosystems through effective protection, responsible management and stronger ocean governance.

PROTECT WHAT REMAINS →
02 / RESTORE

Restore

Rebuild coral reefs, seagrass meadows, kelp forests, wetlands and marine populations so damaged ecosystems can recover their natural resilience.

HELP NATURE RECOVER →
03 / TRANSFORM

Transform

Change the systems behind overfishing, pollution, destructive extraction and greenhouse gas emissions to reduce pressure on the ocean at its source.

CHANGE THE SYSTEM →
04 / RECONNECT

Reconnect

Help people understand their connection to the ocean and turn knowledge into participation, stewardship and meaningful action.

THE FUTURE OCEAN

Recovery begins with what we do now.

The future of the ocean is not predetermined. Decisions made today about climate, fisheries, pollution, marine protection and restoration will shape the ocean inherited by future generations. Ocean Breathing exists to make those connections understandable — and action possible.

ABOUT OCEAN BREATHING

Making the ocean
impossible to ignore.

Ocean Breathing exists to help people understand one of the most important systems supporting life on Earth — our ocean.

The ocean shapes our climate, produces oxygen, supports extraordinary biodiversity and connects every continent on the planet. Yet much of what is happening beneath its surface remains invisible to most of us.

We turn ocean science into experiences people can understand, explore and act upon.

OUR PURPOSE
01 / UNDERSTAND

Make science understandable.

Translate complex ocean research into clear, engaging stories without losing the evidence and science behind them.

02 / CONNECT

Show how everything connects.

Reveal the relationships between ocean health, climate, biodiversity, food systems, communities and our shared future.

03 / ACT

Turn understanding into action.

Help people move from awareness toward meaningful participation, better decisions and long-term ocean stewardship.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

People protect what they understand. And understanding begins when science becomes a story we can see ourselves in.

Ocean Breathing is being developed as an independent ocean education and awareness initiative built around science, storytelling and accessible technology.

GET INVOLVED

Understanding is only
the beginning.

A healthier ocean will require millions of people understanding what is happening, sharing that knowledge and supporting the changes needed to protect and restore marine life.
